Sight Alignment Trigger Control The Big Lie eBook Jim Owens

Well, it's written just as a Marine Drill Sgt. thinks and talks. That's a topic about which I know a thing or two.

And, sometimes it gets a bit tedious, as a result. But overall I'm pleased with the purchase.

Two things I learned I didn't know before. First, I like the concept of trigger control vs. just trigger squeeze. I think we all use trigger control by nature. But Jim makes it obvious and has a lot of knowledge about competitive firing that's applicable to any other field firing.

Second, I agree with Jim's conclusions about The Big Lie. For those of you who don't know what that means, essentially, the shooter shouldn't rely on just on shot to make a sight adjustment, but rather, three would be the minimum. He bases his idea on the fact that the paths of the bullets in a string of fire will describe a circle if enough are fired. And, that circle will be the result of the paths of the string of bullets taken together will describe a cone.

Furthermore, he states that the bullet POI nearer the center of the cone, by virtue of probability, are more likely than POI nearer the edge of the cone. He even suggests that 60% of the POIs are within one standard deviation and most of the rest within two (no mathematics are presented to support this claim).

But adopting the concept of a cone of fire is needed to understand why he calls adjusting fire on the basis of a single shot The Big Lie. He calls it "chasing the marker" and he suggests that almost invariably it results in an over-adjustment. The idea is that the single POI on which the adjustment is being made could be just about anywhere in the cone, whereas, the shooter is assuming that the POI is dead center of his cone.

Makes sense to me and makes me recall the old adage about adjusting sights, don't make the entire sight adjustment suggested by a single or even several shots. Rather, make half of that adjustment each time you adjust.

Sight Alignment Trigger Control The Big Lie eBook Jim Owens Reviews

USMC Ret. M/Sgt Jim Owens has a wealth of knowledge and a good way of telling you . If you want to compete with high power rifles and at Camp Perry, buy this and all his books. You can get them as a package too. I like and now know about the NRA targets and Jim's trick to beat them!
Some topics were pretty obvious to this somewhat experienced shooter. Others were fascinating and new to me. Overall, a well-written book about rifle shooting. If you are a rifle shooter, you really ought to get this. Some sections very specifically geared toward military competitive shooters but still interesting if that's not your thing.
I don't shoot big bore rifles but I do love rim fire rifles. Some of the content is only very interesting for me but there is more than enough information applicable to all rifle shooters to make the purchase worth the cost of the book. i enjoyed the authors writing style and his occasional bits of humor. I will probably read this book several times and then carry it to the range for reference. There were several Gems that I am really looking forward to applying to my aiming and trigger " pushing".
Fantastic book, easy to read, well written and funny. The author has that rare ability to break down very complex subjects in to understandable language. This book has the best treatment I've ever read on MOA and adjustment of sights for different target/range combos. You actually get two books for the price of one. The first book covers the basics and then the in depths of sight alignment and trigger control, part two “The Big Lie” goes into the topic of shooting consistent tight groups at ranges up to a 1000 yards. One topic covered here, that I've never seen covered in depth elsewhere is throat erosion, what it is, how to identify it, symptoms and how to fix it. Graphics work well on e-ink .
I am a former US Marine and shoot several different match types. All of Jim's books will help almost any shooter in most disciplines. The less experience you have the more you will get obviously. I have been shooting for decades and whenever I need a reference I go back to Jim's books. Internet search can make some things so much worse whereas these books are a clean answer to what most shooters are looking for. He's the real deal.
It's very good information. Somewhat more designed around the AR-15.
But you find yourself as if you were in the middle of a desert, parched for water and your canteen is empty.

DRY DRY reading. If it were not a book, it could be a nightlight.
Some information you have to re-read to make it clear to yourself.
Buy it, but be prepared to cross the Sahara Of Reading.
Great stuff from a retired M/Sgt who has extensive experience in firearms instructions and competitive shooting. With-in the first 20 minutes I learned several things that improved my accuracy noticeably. Corrects bad habits and misinformation, plus provides tips on identifying where you're going wrong technique wise based on your shot groupings. Well worth the money and your time reading. Can't recommend it enough!!!
