The first book in a new story arc is often a chancy proposition for both reader and author, and "Kris Longknife - Emissary" is lacking from both perspectives. It is adequate for setting the basic plot for the new series, but very light on character development and emotion when compared with the early books in the Kris Longknife series.There is also a notable decline in the quality of editing and proofreading, with numerous errors in spelling, tense and homophones (words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings.) and even some extraneous editing notes that weren't removed. Too much rushing to meet a deadline?

This time the Itechee have requested her by name and the United Society is eager to open trade, technology and so on with them. However there is a slight problem that no one mentioned. The Itechee are in the middle of a civil war. A War, that the emperor need Kris Longknife the woman who wrote the book- literally- on how to fight the new battle cruisers to win. The Big Bads are still out there and the last thing that anyone needs is a civil war in the largest empire in the known galaxy. This however is symmetrical warfare, meaning that both sides have the same equipment and roughly the same space to work with. Hopefully Kris can pull another proverbial rabbit out of the hat because if the emperor looses, then the United Society will have a two front war and that always ends well.
The editing and proofing are woeful. Worse than that in many first or second novels by new authors. Does Shepherd owe the ITS or an ex a big settlement?
NB I know nothing about Shepherd's taxes or marital situation. The point is simply that the editing and proofing are subpar.
Oh, and the book is too short. Too many writers are dividing tales into segments, adding filler, and selling the heap as a novel
As others have noted, this book is mostly filler and content to set up the next set of books. If we were still on the schedule of one book a year, I would be REALLY unhappy with this book. However, based on the blurb in the back of the book, we should be seeing 3 or 4 books for Kris Longknife in a year, so I can live with a book that is mostly setup for the next few books in the series.
The good
Faster turnaround for books in the Jump Universe. Something to the tune of one a month if the schedule laid out in the end of the book holds.
We learn more about the Iteechee, which is not a bad thing since they have been hanging around without much detail being added in the past.
This book seems to promise a nice new story arc and a decent story was presented in spite of some of the "flaws" myself and other reviewers are noting.
The bad
Editing. Yeah, it could have been better. I personally was not really bothered by it, but I some will be so I mention it here.
This book does not really hit the same notes that the once a year Kris Longknife books have in the past. Again, not all bad since we should see more than one book a year from the Kris series.
Pretty much all of our active story arcs are put on hold. Yep, no Alwa, no crazed crusaders in massive ships, no leaping tigers, none of that. This bothered me because I was REALLY looking forward to some more crazy crusaders. I will give it a pass for now because of the more than one book a year thing.
All in all, I would recommend this book to Kris Longknife fans without too many reservations. If it was one book a year...I would say skip it until the next one comes out.
Out of all in the series, this book is very disappointing. For the most part, this book does not live up to the usual standard all of the other books maintained. In some cases, this book feels like it was rushed out before it was ready and was padded with fluff to increase the page count. A lot of what I am pointing out, is parts the rest of my family is also saying. If anything, they are even harsher then me on picking the book apart.
Some spoilers below
To start with, almost nothing gets down by end of the book, about 90% of the book taken up just getting to the Iteeche home world. So overall, most of the book was rambling on, for pretty much the entire book, and only thing that can be accomplished is that Kris arrives to the Iteeche world? The next part that my family point out is the lack of consistency. The part on this that I am meaning, is that character names are not consistent from one chapter to another, one example would be Abbi's husband's name. He is introduced as one name, but later one has a completely different name. There are other areas that have the same issue, and this is just stuff inside the book; what about names from the other books in the series? Lets not get into the parts of where they are in once place, just to be magically in a different place...
The next part is about the language used. I am not meaning the written language, but more of the word choices. After reading through the series, you get a sense of the general language that the author is using, but this book breaks away from the normal words that he would generally use. One word, my mom mentioned is, boob. In none of the series, does the author ever do that word, and now the author feels it's fine to use it now? It would have been different if he used breast, as it falls in line to what he generally used in the vocabulary. Another example would be satrap. Where did this come from? Now from context, you can get an idea of what the meaning is; but I would bet most people won't know what that word means.
The last part that others bring up to me about, but I am not as critical about, is the character's actions based on the situation. A good example of when Kris and Ron are in the vehicle going to the Emperor. Ron acts like it's a pleasant stroll through the park, when bullets are flying around, tanks are shooting at you, and other vehicles are blowing up. The entire time, Ron acts like nothing is going on! Come on now, do you really think he would be oblivious to his own safety and what is going on around him?
One additional part, that I consider separate from the book, so does not factor in my feelings about the book. Is more of the author's note at end of the book. The mention of the author going freelance on publishing, has zero effect of my thoughts. In some parts, I have more series and authors that I like that are not through some publisher. The one thing that does not change, is the standard I view books at. I could care less if an author/book is through some major publisher or independent, I judge them the same either way. The plan for other books is fine, I don't really care about either way on that. The part that I do care about and dislike, is how he mentions he is going to push novellas out if he falls behind on getting the main series out. From my impression of how he said it, is that if he is unable to keep up to his release schedule, he's going to stop and push off a side book instead of working on the main book, just to get some more money. To me, that sounds like like he isn't going to focus too much on the book/series, and more interested on just pushing something out.
In the end, I serious hope the author takes this serious, and the next book in the series is back up to the normal standard. I've loved reading the entire series, but if the author is going to allow the book's degrade to trash, I'll sadly have to stop following. This also applies to my entire family and friends that also follow this series, as they too agree that if the next book isn't up to the usual standard, it's not worth following them anymore. Do note, I DO NOT consider novellas part of the series, nor do I read any of them. Novellas are too short to be considered anything more than a teaser and there length would make me more disappointed than anything.
